>> good morning, everyone, it's 6:00 a.m. i'm katie marzullo. thanks for joining us. let's start with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> thank you, catty. we have some changes. we aren't directing fog but we have clouds. we will be watching a cold front that will be sweeping lou the bay area today. that will bring cooler temperatures, some breezy winds, in fact a wind advisory tonight and a few extra clouds. 40s and 50s by about 7:00 this morning. by noontime partly cloudy, 60s around the bay. we will look for mid-60s inland and 50s at the coast. by 4:00 this afternoon, still partly cloudy and the winds will continue to be kicking up.

temperatures you notice still pleasant but not as warm as yesterday. today begins the cool-down. breezy winds tonight. in fact over the higher elevations we are anticipating winds gusting up near 45 miles an hour. more on that and the look at the possibility of maybe some rain and the extended outlook coming up. katie. >> thank you, lisa. developing news. panick and chaos at lax after a man opened up fire and shot and killed a tsa officer. we are learning more about the officer and the suspected shooter, our reporter lilian kim has more from lax. >> reporter: travelers ran for their lives when a gunman shot his way past security at the lax international airport at terminal three. this video captures the panic after the suspect, 23-year-old paul ciancia, approached the checkpoint and pulled a semi-automatic rifle from a bag. he shot and killed one tsa agent and wounded at least three others. >> the first shot went out and it was a loud bang.

i mean, boom! >> everybody panicked. everybody dropped to the ground. >> the shooter seemed to be aiming at tsa officers. a man was holding up his bloody arm. this man barely escaped. >> he was carrying a rifle and he looked at me, and he said tsa? with a question mark. i just shook my head and he kept going. >> some went to the bathrooms and some headed for exits and some hid under a chair. >> i wanted to help them, but i also wanted to cover myself. >> i caught up with him near the rear of the terminal, and that's where an officer-involved shooting occurred. >> the shooter went down wounded. his rifle fell where he did and not a moment too soon. >> there was more than 100 more rounds that literally could have killed everybody in the terminal. >> reporter: as for terminal

three, it's been taken over by investigators. many walked for miles to get to a ride as the airport was closed to cars for most of the day. >> the driver was trying to get here and he called and said it was impossible. he couldn't get anywhere. so i have been, walking for the past hour. >> reporter: authorities say the bag ciancia was carrying contained a one-page handwritten note blasting the tsa. he said his constitutional rights were being violated during tsa searches. at lax, lilian kim, abc7 news. >> here's what we know about the officer who was killed. his name is gerardo hernandez. he's 39-year-old. he works a behavior detection officer and his job was to identify possible terrorists. he had recently transferred from montana. the head of the tsa will visit his family in los angeles today. it's the first time a tsa officer has been killed on duty in the agency's 12 years. who is the shooter? why did he snap? why was he targeting the tsa? we look into the gun man's background.

>> reporter: in the small town of pennsville, new jersey, paul anthony ciancia's family got a disturbing text. it was troubling enough that allen cumming was called to the house. he said the text they received suggested the 23-year-old might kill himself. >> our procedure is if someone is concerned about a family member, we call that local police department and do a well-being check and that's basically what we did. it came back he wasn't home. >> l.a.p.d. officers went to his apartment and talked to his roommates. they said the 23-year-old just left, but seemed to be fine. >> he was a nice guy, a little loner, introverted, but nothing that i would ever, ever expect him to do something like this. >> about the same time chaos was erupting at lax. at the had no idea that a gunman, later identified as ciancia, was shooting up terminal 3 at lax.

the fbi has since joined pennsville police at the ciancia home in new jersey. >> reporter: chief, you know this family well, you grew up with their family. what kind of people are they? >> good people. >> he's a graduate of a delaware high school. former classmates said he kept to himself and may have been bullied. abc7 news. >> the shooting caused massive air traffic trouble across the country. hundreds of flights had to be diverted from lax. some were cancelled and some were delayed. we have more on the inconvenience for travelers. >> reporter: just before 9:00 p.m. these weary travelers arrived at sfo. many had been stuck at lax all day. sebastian was coming back from australia. his plane landed at 9:0030 a.m., just minutes after the shooting. >> my brother, who lives in los angeles, texted me on my phone as soon as i landed and said be careful, there's been a shooting there. >> jenne was also traveling to sfo from australia. she realized something was wrong after she got her baggage.

>> the doors closed and there was a hold up at the doors. one of the police or tsa said, look, there's been an emergency you are staying here. you are safe. >> they kept us in a baggage claim just like this area for five hours. >> the shooting disrupted more than 700 flights across the country. delays and cancellations left passengers stranded or rerouted. at sfo it also meant heightened security. >> out of an abundance. of caution, they stepped up routine patrols around the terminals. >> as the evening wore on, terminal 2 began to look like every other friday night and travelers managed to make the best of it. >> on the scheme of things, we can deal with that for a day. it's unfortunate the tsa lost one of theirs, i think the first time ever. that's the tough part of the whole day in my opinion. >> reporter: a little perspective. abc7 news. >> abc7 news first reported the shooting early yesterday morning

in the grass with her baby, who wasn't hurt. he was arraigned last week and after the arraignment his son, jonathan, was involved in a possible hit-and-run with a bicyclist after leaving court. however, yesterday police decided not to charge him. this morning eight people are recovering after being rushed to a hospital after a car burst into flames in the callicut tunnel yesterday afternoon. it happened just before 10:00 a.m.. this is a picture of moving through the smoky tunnel. he said it was hard to breathe. >> i did not have a scarf. i good put my shirt up over my face. other people had scarfs wrapped around their mouths. some people had breathing masks like a dust protector mask. >> seven of the eight people taken to the hospital of children. sky 7hd shows medics treating people on highway 24. eastbound lanes were shut down for nearly two hours during the response.

with just a touch of disney magic. for special offers, visit disneyaulani.com >> new details this morning in a rewood city apartment complex fire that injured four people. out media partner, "the mercury news" reports the owners are not allowing residents to go back into the building to get their belongings. the owners are tell residents the building is badly damaged and may even be toxic following the october 17th fire. they are allowing them to get a few boxes out of the building. the fire appears to be accidental. a veteran trainer at six flags discovery kingdom in vallejo was bitten by a sea lion yesterday. a spokeswoman says

the animal bit the trainer in the leg. she was treated by paramedics and taken to the hospital for a tetanus shot. park officials can't say why the animal bit her, and the sea lion is being evaluated. six flags is open this weekend, but it's not clear if the sea lion show will go on. abc7 news has obtained the 911 and dispatch tapes from the day authorities found abandoned patients at a bay area assisted living facility. several calls were taken as the two remaining staff members asked for ambulances to help patients at valley springs manor. when first responders arrived on the scene, they realized there was a bigger problem. >> we responded to this location. it's -- it's been taken over by the state and there are still clients in the building without any support. looks like the management people left them here. >> we've also learned state workers visited the facility as

late as friday afternoon. the department of social services spokesman says he doesn't know whether the state workers were aware whether of residents were only being cared for by a cook and a janitor. >> hundreds of cameras will be stationed on the streets of new york city tomorrow to monitor the new york city marathon. super storm sandy cancelled the race last year. now they are spending millions on security, double the previous amount. that's in response to the boston marathon bombings last spring. there be security check points which could change the feel of the finish line. >> whether it's just new yorkers, fans of the race, it's a great idea to stay away from that area. >> 43 police dogs will be on the ground sniffing for explosives and each runner will receive a clear bag for personal items. an estimated 45,000 runners are expected to participate in the marathon. also tomorrow there will be a solar eclipse. no matter where you are in the world you will be able to see

headed down to a coffee shop where people who know about apps tend to hang out. >> have you ever used bit strips? >> never heard of them. >> do you use bit strips? >> no. >> bit strips are colorful cartoons some of your friends may be posting on facebook featuring characters that may look like your friends. >> people love it. love it is an understatement. bit strips has now topped downloads, making it the hottest app on both the android and i-phone stores. 11 million there's so much demand it crashed the company's website, sending them scrambling for a fix. the ceo said we've been overwhelmed by the response and have our heads down keeping things up and running. they are ecstatic about the popularity. but how does it work? finally i came face-to-face into an expert user. >> just kind of jumped into it and i usually make about one or two a day now. he explains the jeanias of bit strips is it's quick. they have artists drawing new

the pressure gradient, but the winds kicking up and allowing for the clear sky. but that's going to be offset by the winds and by a cold front that will visit us throughout the afternoon. here's a look from the tower camera this morning where it is nice and clear with 50 in san francisco, 51 in oakland. good morning, los gatos, 49 for you. half moon bay has a little bit in the way of fog with a quarter mile visibility at times. so be advised of that if you are traveling along the coast. we've been sitting in santa rosa at 40. 41 napa, and over into our east bay valleys clear. 45 in the livermore valley. so a couple of changes headed our way for the weekend. in fact, more seasonal weather with a cool-down on the way. as much as two to five degrees cooler today and the winds conclude upton. a wind advisory. especially at the higher elevations and the coast, and perhaps rain headed our way not until the end of the upcoming work week. at this point it doesn't look like a great chance of rain but maybe a pattern change. so from 11:00 tonight, 7:00 tomorrow morning, some very

gusty winds. in fact, they could gust up to 45 miles an hour from santa cruz mountains, the diablo range and up in the north bay mountains as well. it will get windy on the coast. today as high pressure drifts way, the cold front is still to the north of us. throughout the early part of the day. rainfall will stay up in extreme northern california. we will look for just a few more extra clouds. then the slightly cooler air pushing in behind it. temperatures coming down. so they have been well above normal today. today will be more like average. more 60s and 70s. you notice the trend does continue into tomorrow, the second half of the weekend. but today temperatures in the upper 60s. that's the switch for san jose. 27 morgan hill. still pleasant around the bay but just not as warm. 68 sunnyvale. 67 in san mateo, and milbrae coming in about 65. west winds kicking up at the coast today. it will be bright and sunny, but

we look at temperatures coming down today. right now it's cooler. santa rosa at 40. half moon bay 46 and some fog. san carlos 45. and the changes come with a cold front that will be push luke the bay area today. now behind it is when we get the slightly cooler air. tonight we will have gusty winds. but around the bay today, low 60s to the upper 60s around the san ramon valley and berkeley, castro valley. but at the coast, we will call it partly cloudy, upper 50s to the low 60s. inland still pleasant. you see 60s and 70s. today begin the changes. the second half of the weekend should be cooler and we are leaving room for a little bit of rain coming our way, perhaps into the upcoming work week. we will detail that for you in the accuweather seven-day forecast. katie. >> lisa, thank you. developing news out of l.a. we are learning more about the terrifying shooting at los angeles international airport, including the identities of the shooter and the victim. good morning.

kiko is live at the airport. do you have an update for us? >> reporter: good morning to you, katie. this morning we learned terminal three where the shooter occurred is partially reopened to passengers. that's good news for the thousands of people affected by the shooting yesterday in a scene that many called one of sheer chaos. a quiet morning suddenly plunged into havoc friday. the stampede of terrified travelers when a lone gunman, a 23-year-old paul ciancia, approached a tsa checkpoint and culled a semiautomatic rifle from a bag. he shot one tsa officer dead and wounded at least two others. >> the first shot went out, and, i mean, it was a loud bang, i mean, boom! the shooter seemed to be aiming at tsa officers.

a man wearing a blue tsa uniform was helped from the scene, holding up his bloody arm. >> i heard gunshots and we all just went down to the ground. >> those who could made a run for the exits while others sought shelter in bathrooms. >> i caught up with him near the rear of the terminal, and that is where an officer-involved shooting occurred. >> the gunman went down, wound by police gunfire. he was taken to the hospital by ambulance under heavy guard. police say his rifle fell where he did. along with ammunition that might have fueled a bloodbath. >> there were more than 100 more rounds that could have literally killed everybody in that terminal today. >> the tsa officer who died was gerardo i hernandez. he was 39. the first tsa agent ever killed in the like of duty. >> a tsa officer got up and went to work this morning and is not going to go home to their family. hernandez was a father of two

who recently transferred here from montana. law enforcement said the alleged shooter left behind a note that specifically addressed anger and frustration at the tsa. the note also suggested the alleged shooter expected to die out here in an airport shooting. abc7 news. katie. >> kiko, a quick question for you. stick the alleged shooter. we heard from roommates who said he was a normal guy, maybe a bit of a loner. what have we heard from his family some. >> well, reportedly his younger brother in new jersey reportedly received a text message from him that indicated he might do harm to himself and that caused the lapd to construct a welfare check to his apartment prior to the shooting. he went to his apartment and talked to the roommates and they reported back that everything seemed to be okay. >> now we know it was not. thank you, live from lax thisçó

morning. a big gun show at the cal palace is the first. the show becomes more controversial with yesterday's shooting at lax. we have the story. >> reporter: during the last year crossroads of the west gun shows attracted over 400,000 customers. crossroads of the west is billed as the biggest gun show in the country. this is state property and the state has no problem with the shows. let the decision making -- this spring, a state senator mark leno proposed a bill that would have required both san francisco and san mateo supervisors to approve gun shows at the cal palace. both went on record opposing the gun shows. if the bill became law, that would be banned here. the legislature passed the bill but governor brown vetoed it. the bill's owner said it was not good for the state. >> it would cost about $1 million to replace the revenue the gun show creates for the state.

>> the show comes in the weak of the shooting in los angeles. a gunman fired a rifle killing a tsa agent and wounding several others. now again, the question of banning high-powered weapons. templeton the answer is not about guns. >> until we address the underlying issues of mental health, we around going to be able to get a handle on stopping these horrible, tragic mass shootings. >> gun rights advocates argue that it really boils down to a second amendment issue, pure and simple. congresswoman jackie spear has sponsored several gun buybacks. she's an outspoken advocate for a federal ban on gun shows. >> no one wants to take a gun away from someone who rightfully owns one, but no one needs an assault weapon. in the show opens this weekend and as usual, the cal palace parking lot will be filled and

thousands will attend. vic lee, abc7 news. >> there will be a memorial today for a san jose teenager who was shot and killed by an officer. a federal civil rights lawsuit will be filed monday in san francisco. andy was shot october 22nd while holding a toy gun that looked like an ak-47 assault rifle. his older brother, anthony, said the family is doing its best to cope, considering all things. >> they are hanging in there. it's really hard on everyone. the house isn't even the same anymore. >> how so? >> it's quiet. feels like there's a void in the house. >> today's gathering for andy will be held on the field at moreland avenue at 3:00. >> new this morning, president obama said budget negotiations in congress are about choices and priorities. in his weekly address he urges congress to pass a budget that includes spending on education, infrastructure and research. he said there's an obsession for cutting spending just for the

the upscale east bay community of piedmont is fighting a recent crime wave by putting up security cameras along it's borders. the police department doesn't want to say exactly where they are located but we know there will be a lot of them. wayne freedman has the story. >> reporter: around outlying enter second necessary piedmont, look up. they might call these the eyes of big brother but not ideal in the big island city. >> i think we need big brother
